What is Precision Psychiatry?
Precision psychiatry is part of an evolving field that focuses on personalised care. Just as a thermometer can give an exact reading when you have a fever, precision medicine aims to offer clear, tailored insights. While we have tests to quickly diagnose physical conditions, psychiatry is different. Mental health challenges like anxiety and depression are harder to measure, and we don’t yet have specific tools to diagnose them with the same accuracy. It’s an area where research is growing, with the goal of delivering more precise and effective care.
Understanding psychiatric conditions today often involves looking at a person’s overall behaviour and personality. Take, for example, two people who are both outgoing and love sports — they might share these traits for completely different reasons. The same goes for depression. One person may feel depressed after losing a loved one, while another struggles due to ADHD and impulsive decisions.
To truly understand what’s behind someone’s mental health challenges, we need to consider multiple factors. This includes everything from childhood experiences, education, and family history, to specific life situations or even medical conditions. Medication side effects can also play a role.

We dig deep into these factors, exploring causes of mental health problems such as childhood trauma —neglect, abuse, poverty, or losing a parent — along with educational difficulties like ADHD, bullying, or poor parenting. We also examine fears and losses, whether related to social status, strained relationships, health issues, or work problems. We look into inherited factors by examining family history, such as mental health issues in parents or siblings. And medical conditions — from diabetes to heart disease, thyroid problems, or even menopause — all are considered as potential contributors to mental health.
Abuse, addictions, and social issues like unemployment or debt are all part of the evaluation, as are side effects from common medications. Other psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder or eating disorders, are also factored in to provide a full picture.
Unlike diagnosing a physical illness like COVID, mental health issues have many causes, each requiring different treatments. To make an accurate diagnosis, psychiatrists carefully review your history and medical background, running specialised tests to rule out or identify specific issues like hypothyroidism.
The complexity of depression can make it challenging to treat. Other psychiatrists might rely on a one-size-fits-all approach, and if that doesn’t work, they may try other options or give up. This trial-and-error process can lead to lower expectations for recovery. Our approach aims to break this cycle by offering a more personalised approach to mental health care.
